Detailing clay is used to take out surface contaminants that normal washing cannot, contaminants like asphalt, tree sap, bugs, tar and even paint overspray. To effectively use clay bars you'll need a clay lubricant so that the clay doesn't stick and smear all over the paint as you rub it over the surface.
Claying is a vital step in prepping the paint for wax or sealant application because it gives you a really smooth surface free from contaminants and allows the wax or sealant to bond. Not only that, the shine and depth will be magnified even more because of the prep work done. Just like painting your vehicle, if you do the prep work right you'll achieve the best results. Waxing is just the cherry on top so to speak.
